I was just reading an article in Reuters and had to share with you the alarming statistics from a new government study led by Jonathan Wortham, a CDC epidemiologist.
According to the article, “The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed more than 10,000 deaths in 15 states and New York City from February to May. What they found were that nearly 40% of people who have died with COVID-19 had diabetes and that among deaths of those under 65, half had the chronic condition.”
I do not know about you BUT this really saddens and scares me because Diabetes is already an epidemic currently affecting over 34 million people.
You are probably wondering why and how Diabetes increases your risks of Covid-19 complications. Here are the reasons….
1. Chronic elevated blood sugars lead to a perfect environment for the virus to survive
2. Chronic elevated blood sugar damages small and large blood vessels, like the heart and kidneys, two of the organs the virus targets
3. Diabetes can weaken the immune system impacting ability to fight the virus
4. Diabetes is associated with chronic low levels of inflammation, combine with high blood sugar, affects ability to recover from the virus
Next, you are probably wondering what you can do NOW to lower your risks of developing Diabetes and Covid-19 related complications.
The first and most important thing you can do right now is to incorporate healthy lifestyle habits to lower your risk of developing Diabetes. Eat healthy, exercise, reduce stress and get plenty of sleep.
